Besigye to be Charged With Murder
FDC’s Col. Dr Kizza Besigye was arrested last evening while making his way to Kabale Municipality from his home district of Rukungiri.The former Presidential candidate was picked up at Burambira Trading Center in Bubaare Sub County, Rubanda district by waiting police as he tried to enter Kabale.
Police say all day they had been hunting for Besigye to hold him accountable for the crimes committed during a chaotic political rally in Rukungiri town on Wednesday that left one person dead and several hospitalized.Besigye was part of the rally having been invited there by Rukungiri municipality MP Roland Kaginda.
The Wednesday involved police who had deployed to stop the rally and hundreds of locals who had come to be consulted on the presidential age limit constitutional amendment.Police had apparently not cleared the meeting, which sparked the clashes as officers sealed off the entrance to Rukungiri Stadium and fended off the angry locals from gate crashing the venue.
In the scuffle that followed, at least was person was killed, and six others were hospitalized, most with bullet wounds.Police deny shooting the deceased, insisting he was hit by a brick, and now they are holding Dr Besigye personally accountable for this death.ACP Denis Namuwoza, the Kigezi regional police commander said last evening that they arrested Besigye for the several crimes that he committed on Wednesday.
He said Besigye is now facing charges ranging from murder, holding unlawful assembly, attempted murder, assaulting police officers while on duty, malicious damage of property, unlawful procession and inciting violence.
