Barcelona president Sandro Rosell has confirmed that he hopes to persuade goalkeeper Victor Valdes to stay at the club beyond the end of this season.
The 31-year-old is out of contract at the end of next season and has already publicly confirmed that he will not be signing a new deal with the La Liga champions.
However, Rosell has indicated that manager Tito Villanova and director of football Andoni Zubizarreta are optimistic that the Spanish international will stay for the forthcoming season, even if that means Valdes could leave the club on a free transfer next summer.
Talking with Sky Sports, Rosell said: “I want to speak with the player. Tito, Zubizarreta and I would like a direct meeting.
“The player does not have to leave the club in the summer as his deal ends in 2014. After that we will analyse the goalkeeping situation.”
