AUPL: 10-Man Kirinya ‘Kill’ SC Villa’s Title Hopes
Uganda Premier League
Kirinya Jinja SS 1-0 SC Villa
SC Villa’s chances of winning the Azam Uganda Premier League suffered another setback after they lost 1-0 to ten man Kirinya Jinja SS today at Kakindu Stadium.
The defeat left SC Villa on 47 points, only one point above second placed KCCA who were not in action but have four games in hand.
Midfielder Bashir Mutanda who is on loan from Vipers got the only goal of the game to give Kirinya maximum points but also dent SC Villa’s chances of winning the title.
Either teams began with a cautious mentality failing to find the cutting edge.
Umar Kasumba got the first attempt at goal in the 24th minute but failed to find the target by few inches.
Defender Livingston Mulondo made a timely interception and Kasumba failed to calm his nerves to out the ball beyond goalkeeper Tom Ikara. The decisive moment came in the 53rd minute with referee Dennis Batte pointing to the spot kick after a foul in the area on George Ssenkaba. Bashir Mutanda stepped up to convert the resultant sending goalkeeper Samson Kirya the wrong way.
Ssenkaba was sent off with 15 minutes to time after elbowing defender Ibrahim Kiyemba.
Despite several attempts from Villa including Kamanzi hitting the woodwork, Kirinya held on to earn maximum points.
The result means Kirinya Jinja SS moved out of the drop zone to 11th on 27 points while SC Villa remain top on 47 points despite the loss. This was Villa’s second game without a win after losing to Express 1-0 in their last outing almost a fortnight ago.
Elsewhere, Police head coach Abdullah Mubiru returned after the end of his two game touchline ban but couldn’t inspire his side that settled for a goalless draw with Bright Stars at Namboole Stadium.
