Arsene Wenger tight-lipped over Wayne Rooney to Arsenal transfer potential
Role reversal? Could Rooney join Robin van Persie’s former club?
Arsene Wenger has remained coy on speculation that Arsenal could launch a sensational bid to prise Wayne Rooney away from Manchester United.
The Gunners are believed to be one of the clubs monitoring the striker’s situation at Old Trafford, and Wenger did little to play down the possibility of making a move for the unsettled 27-year-old.
‘Look, I’m not in a position today to speak about any transfer targets,’ said the Frenchman.
‘What I am focused on is the short term and after the Newcastle game I give you answers about these questions.’
When pressed as to whether he could ever envisage such a major player leaving Old Trafford for Arsenal, Wenger added: ‘I just told you!’
However, the Gunners boss may face a sterner fight for Rooney than initially anticipated, after new United manager David Moyes labelled the forward a world-class talent.
Moyes, speaking at the Cambridge Union Society, was asked about Rooney’s progress since he sold him from Everton to Old Trafford, and said: ‘I don’t watch all Manchester United games.
‘But he is definitely one of the best players in the world.
‘I remember watching him during training and he was amazing.
‘We [the staff] asked each other: ‘Did he just do that?’ I believe he is the last street footballer, the kind like in Glasgow.’
