Age Limit petitioners Insist the Electoral Commission must be ordered to hold fresh elections come 2021
Lawyers representing petitioners in the age-limit case at Mbale High court, are still making their submissions before a panel of 5 Constitutional court justices.
Currently on the floor is the Lord Mayor Elias Lukwago who is representing the opposition politicians led by the leader of Opposition Winfred Kiiza and other 5 opposition MPs.
Lukwago just like the law society Lawyer Wandera Ogalo is asking court to declare sections 2 and 8 of the age-limit law null and void, because there was no justification for parliament to exercise its legislative powers in enlarging their tenure for more 2 years.
Both Lukwago and Ogalo contend that the issue of extension of the tenure of office of Mps and LC5 leaders, was never provided for in the Infamous Magyezi bill and was just brought as a by -the way to be smuggled into the law.
The 2 lawyers have cited several examples to court where Mps from other countries tried to extend their tenure of office and it caused restlessness, they have now asked the Constitutional court to put a stop at it and declare that the current Mps will represent their electorates up to 2021, and the EC organises fresh elections.
