600 people drown in Lake Victoria annually-report
More than 600 people drown in Lake Victoria in Buvuma district annually due to lack of swimming skills and prevention measures like life jackets.
Buvuma district is comprised of 52 small islands with more than 600 landing sites. Residents in the district depend on fishing and farming for survival.
Anthony Okware Sabastian, the LC 3 chairperson of Buvuma town council, says they lose at least one person on each island annually because they don’t know how to swim and lack survival skills.
As a result, Swim Safe Uganda and police have pitched camp in the district to teach fishermen and local leaders swimming and survival skills in water.
